Performance-Centered Leadership gives managers the ability to develop others and create an environment where employees are prepared to act in the face of challenge and change. If employees are waiting for the manager’s instructions, performance is compromised.
The three-stage process of developing Performance-Centered Leadership results in strong leadership skills, high team performance and the ability to handle the unexpected.
Stage I: Developing the core of the leader.
With a strong core, a leader has resilience, endurance, agility, and sustained high performance. Developing the core of the leader involves awareness and development of self in three key areas:
- Emotional competence;
- Commitment to learning and growth; and
- Replenishing the energy supply.
Stage II: Adopting a performance mind-set towards others.
Without sufficient development, an organization risks having employees who cannot—and will not—act without the leader;
everything grinds to a halt. In this stage, the manager learns the skills to
- Become aware of their employees’ feelings and develop empathy so they can build trust, and
- Once trust is built, begin to cultivate performance.
The result is employees who can perform effectively without micro-management.
Stage III: Driving performance.
Driving performance can only begin after the first two stages are established. There are three elements of driving performance:
- Choosing the right leadership style given the team and the situation,
- Consciously creating a high-performance environment, and
- Using relationships to drive performance.
Employing this model, managers can develop leadership strength, build trust, increase employee performance and be prepared to tackle new challenges.
