When you ignore the world, the world ignores you. Yesterday was opening day for baseball! After a long winter here in Chicago, it was great to see our Cubbies in action! Before the game, Mr. Cubbie himself, Ernie Banks, was honored. He was my absolute favorite player when I was a young child and when I think of baseball, I think of him. He was interviewed during the game and he was asked what his most memorable game was. He said that it was when he was part of a no-hitter that was pitched by his buddy and teammate. The commentator noted that that answer was typical of Banks' unselfish play. After all, Banks had a lot of memories to choose from, including the game when he hit his 500th homerun. Banks then made the following observation:
His observation made me think. It's so easy to get caught up in our individual achievement that we forget that even if we are solo entrepreneurs, we are part of a larger community. There are people who are there pulling for us; just as there are people who need and appreciate our support. How are we demonstrating our support for others? For myself, I know that when I feel the most alone in my journey, I begin to wonder if I've been too focused on my own stuff, my own worries, my own goals. There's nothing wrong with taking care of yourself (it is your job to do), but, for me, when I focus only on myself, I start to lose energy and I start to feel too isolated. I know that I need the support and friendship of others if I am to not just succeed, but, more importantly, relish the journey! The next time you are feeling forgotten by the world, pause and ask yourself if perhaps you have temporarily forgotten the world around you?
