This past weekend, I was at a conference in Arizona for one of my very favorite clients. I’ve been part of their conferences for the past five years and I always feel energized by the interactions. I was reflecting on why I always felt energized by this group. Here are my thoughts: This is group of highly motivated, committed and dedicated professionals who, every year, come together for the collective good of the organization. I have rarely - if ever – witnessed the amount of knowledge sharing and problem solving as I see with them. If someone has a tough challenge with a client, everyone joins in the discussion and offers ideas, solutions and encouragement. I was watching one presentation by one of the consultants and they were literally sharing their secrets of success – step by step – so that everyone could benefit. That’s special. Not to be overlooked, is that they know how to have fun! I usually leave the closing dinner with a headache from laughing and smiling so much. That’s just a great problem to have. The other thing that I, as an outsider, see is that they truly care about each other. All of those elements transform them from a group of people to a high-performing team. For the teams that you are part of, how many of those elements are there? What are other elements that exist? What are the unique and special qualities that you bring that add to the collective whole? The big question is this: if you believe that your team is special, do they know it? Have you discussed with them the way they feel about the team? Has the team identified what makes them powerful?
