How to Create a Wanted Poster for Your Inner Saboteurs So You Can Stop the Damage They Wreak in Tour Life

Back when I was a freshman in high school, there was a local scare. There were 6 convicts who somehow escaped from a nearby facility. They were all serving multiple life sentences; they were armed and were considered very dangerous.

We lived in a very rural area. A couple of days into the search from the escapees, the local sheriff stopped by our farm. He told us that they had been tracking these men and that they believed that they were within a 2-mile radius of our farm, which was largely surrounded by woods and fields.

The sheriff showed us the wanted posters and pictures of all of the men because he wanted us to be on the lookout. Five of the six men were pretty scary looking.

Then the sheriff pointed to the sixth man, and he said, “This is the one that I’m most concerned about. He’s the most dangerous.”

My dad asked: “what makes him the most dangerous?”

The sheriff replied: “Because he looks ordinary and harmless. Most people wouldn’t hesitate to stop and help him.”

That always stuck with me.

How something that looks benign might be the most dangerous.

In the last episode, I talked about mental fitness and this week I want to share with you one of the 3 core mental fitness muscles: the Saboteur Interceptor Muscle.

Just like the harmless looking escaped convict, our Saboteurs might appear to be benign – or even our friend – but the damage they cause is very real. Researchers describe Saboteurs as our automatic ways of thinking, feeling and acting that we’ve learned over our lifetime. They are the cause of much of our stress, unhappiness and they inhibit peak performance.

Tune into part 1 of this 3-part series on building your mental fitness so you can thrive no matter what.
