The confidence to test a comfort zone

Awhile ago, while I was coaching a manager, I was asked why it is that I am willing to venture outside of my comfort zone.  At that time, I don’t think I had a very good answer.  However, since then, as I’m tackling something new or venturing into new territory, I’ve been paying attention to that question.  The answer that occurred to me today is that while I do sometimes doubt my knowledge or skill in a certain area (meaning I can see my own gap), I never doubt my ability to learn and adapt.  I think that’s an important distinction.  If I feel like I always have to have the answer or show proficiency at a skill, I will likely stay where I’m comfortable.  When I let go of that, however, and give myself the freedom to try and learn, I am energized and I grow.
